At its core, Food Scann leverages global food databases (such as Open Food Facts and USDA FoodData Central) via secure RESTful APIs to retrieve up-to-date nutritional information for millions of food items worldwide. When a user scans a product’s barcode using their smartphone camera, the app instantly decodes the Universal Product Code (UPC) or European Article Number (EAN), queries the backend database, and presents a clean, visually appealing summary of key nutritional facts: calories, macronutrients (proteins, carbohydrates, fats), sugar content, sodium levels, allergen warnings, ingredient lists, and even health ratings based on recognized nutritional scoring systems (e.g., Nutri-Score).
