Bem vindo a casa do Café Estreito – “Welcome to the home of Café Estreito.”

Five decades ago, our family cook was born, with a great passion for cooking and bringing people together; she took her culinary cooking adventure one step further when she merged her Portuguese taste buds with South Africa, a place she calls home. She introduced her cooking techniques to our head chef at Café Estreito. Even though we saw the food through this lady’s eyes the culinary journey was far from over…

During the tastings, each dish had to enhance our tastebuds, feed our eyes and give us the longing of saudade. Saudade, a Portuguese word with no translation, it can be described as a profound state of longing for something you love. This longing love is brewed in our coffee, our refreshments, our favourite foods and our confectionery pastries.

The next step was choosing our main attraction for our cultural experience. For hundreds of years making a cup of coffee was a simple process but we did not want simple, we wanted elite. We realized that even the most skilled barista needed a highly competent, top of the range coffee creator. Once this was chosen the exploration of creating unique drinking cups was inspired.

We want our cups to be the journey to the destination. As you sip your coffee you are reminded of a deeper cultural belonging. It needs to be a social festa. Every day should start with our cultured coffee and end blissfully with one of our crispy, crunchy mouthwatering delicacies.

Throughout this entire journey not only did we met the expectations that the creators had in mind, but we grew into their culture and created Café Estreito. Their Portuguese, Madeiran roots are now the foundation of Café Estreito. Just like this foundation sets all threads in their life, soon it will be a tune always playing in your back
ground. Soon you will realise that the Portuguese will be part of your life too.
